…Ó, tehát értékeljétek igen nagyra a Szentírást! – Thomas Watson (c. 1620–1686)

– C.H. Spurgeon

Élj Isten Igéjéből! (C.H. Spurgeon)
Hadd idézzem John Bunyan-t annak példájaként, mire is gondolok.

A haldoklásakor a fájdalom-kiáltása szavait is ebből idézte (Mát. 27:46). – Henry H. Halley (1874–1965)

The way to deal with God’s Word is not merely to contemplate it, or to study it, as a student does; but to live on it. – C.H. Spurgeon

I want to know one thing, the way to heaven; how to land safe on that happy shore. God Himself has condescended to teach the way; for this end He came from heaven. He hath written it down in a book. Give me that book! At any price give me the Book of God! – John Wesley

Be exhorted to prize the written Word (Job 23:12). David valued the Word more than gold. What would the martyrs have given for a leaf of the Bible! The Word is the field where Christ the pearl of price is hid. In this sacred mine we dig, not for a wedge of gold, but for a weight of glory. …Oh, then, highly prize the Scriptures. – Thomas Watson

Need I suggest the question as to whether you do read your Bibles or not? I am afraid that this is a magazine-reading age, a newspaper-reading age, a periodical-reading age, but not so much a Bible-reading age as it ought to be. In the old Puritanic times men used to have a scant supply of other literature, but they found a library enough in the one book, the Bible. And how they did read the Bible! – C.H. Spurgeon

Lord Bacon tells of a certain bishop who used to bathe regularly twice every day, and on being asked why he bathed thus often, replied, “Because I cannot conveniently do it three times.” If those who love the Scriptures were asked why they read the Bible so often, they might honestly reply, “because we cannot find time to read it oftener.” The appetite for the Word grows on that which it feeds on. We would say with Thomas à Kempis, “I would always be in a nook with a book. – C.H. Spurgeon

Live Upon the Word of God! by C.H. Spurgeon
How instructive to us is this great Truth of God that the Incarnate Word lived on the Inspired Word! It was food to Him, as it is to us and, Brothers and Sisters, if Christ thus lived upon the Word of God, should not you and I do the same? He, in some respects, did not need this Book as much as we do. The Spirit of God rested upon Him without measure, yet He loved the Scripture and He went to it, studied it and used its expressions continually. Oh, that you and I might get into the very heart of the Word of God and get that Word into ourselves!
As I have seen the silkworm eat into the leaf and consume it, so ought we to do with the Word of the Lord—not crawl over its surface, but eat right into it till we have taken it into our inmost parts! It is idle to merely let the eyes glance over the Words, or to remember the poetical expressions, or the historic facts—but it is blessed to eat into the very soul of the Bible until, at last, you come to talk in Scriptural language and your very style is fashioned upon Scripture models—and, what is still better, your spirit is flavored with the words of the Lord!
I would quote John Bunyan as an instance of what I mean. Read anything of his and you will see that it is almost like reading the Bible itself. He had read it till his very soul was saturated with Scripture and though his writings are charmingly full of poetry, yet he cannot give us his Pilgrim’s Progress—that sweetest of all prose poems—without continually making us feel and say, “Why, this man is a living Bible!” Prick him anywhere—his blood is Bibline—the very essence of the Bible flows from him! He cannot speak without quoting a text, for his very soul is full of the Word of God. I commend His example to you, Beloved and, still more, the example of our Lord Jesus! – C.H. Spurgeon

Jesus’ Knowledge of the Old Testament
At that time the Old Testament constituted the written Word of God. Jesus loved it. His familiarity with it at the age of 12 astounded the great theologians of the Temple. He lived by it. Used it to resist the tempter (Matthew 4:4, 7, 10). Went to the cross to fulfill it (Matthew 26:54). Uttered his dying agonies in quotation from it (Matthew 27:46). To the Old Testament writings there has been added another group of writings, called the New Testament, centered around the life of Jesus himself. If what Jesus had of our Bible was dear to him, it seems like a thousandfold dearer ought what we have be to us. – Henry H. Halley
