“Ha meg szeretnéd látni Krisztus dicsőségét úgy, mint ahogy arról az Atya is bizonyságot tett, akkor igenis sokat kell időznöd az Ő halálánál!

Ne csak arról beszélj nekem, hogy milyen volt Krisztus élete, a maga tisztaságában. Ezt tudom, és nagyon örülök is ennek, de mondom nektek, hogy Krisztus halála, annak minden nyomorúságával és szenvedésével együtt, a legnagyszerűbb pontja és alkotórésze az egésznek!

Jézus követendő példáját valóban minden módon igyekeznünk kell felmutatni, de az általa elvégzett engesztelés még nagyszerűbb; és nektek, uraim, akik elkezdtek beszélni az ember Krisztusról, és hízelgő, hangzatos dicshimnuszokat zengtek Róla, majd pedig elfordultok, és megtagadjátok az Ő jóvátételi halálát, nektek pedig én mondom, hogy a mutatós, de üres ajándékaitok az Ő szemében elfogadhatatlanok; a Neki szóló bókjaitok majdhogynem cenzúráztatni valók – mert ha nem úgy hisztek Benne, hogy Ő igenis a bűnökért való engesztelő áldozat volt, akkor még mindig nem értettétek meg az Ő életét!” (C.H. “Mert nem azért küldött engem a Krisztus, hogy kereszteljek, hanem hogy az evangéliumot hirdessem; de nem szólásban való bölcseséggel, hogy a Krisztus keresztje hiábavaló ne legyen. Mert a keresztről való beszéd bolondság ugyan azoknak, akik elvesznek; de nekünk, kik megtartatunk, Istennek ereje. Mert meg van írva: Elvesztem a bölcseknek bölcseségét és az értelmeseknek értelmét elvetem. Hol a bölcs? hol az írástudó? hol e világnak vitázója? Nemde nem bolondsággá tette-é Isten e világnak bölcseségét? “If you desire to see the glory of Christ, as attested of the Father, you must dwell much on his death.

Do not talk to me about the life of Christ in all its purity. I know it and rejoice in it; but I tell you that the death of Christ, in all his misery, is the grandest point or view.

The example of Jesus should be exalted by all means, but his atonement is grander far; and you, sirs, who take the man Christ, and offer your pretty, complimentary phrases about him, but then turn round and deny his expiating sacrifice, I tell you your tawdry offerings are unacceptable to him; to be complimented by your lips is almost to be censured, for if you do not believe on him as an atoning sacrifice, you do not understand his life.” (C.H. “For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of no effect. For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written: “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, And bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.” Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the disputer of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? For since, in the wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God, it pleased God through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe.
